What is HLC?

HLC offers online, interactive versions of books from Cengage. These books feature unique interactive options for students and instructors at all levels.

How do I create a student account?

If you have never created an account before, click here to create your new account. You will need a valid e-mail address.

How do I purchase a book?

There are two ways to purchase a book: (1) prepackaged with a textbook, or (2) separately, using a credit card.

If you purchased a new textbook, it may have come prepackaged with a book key. A book key is a code that grants you access to the online book. Just enter the code in the field in the upper-right corner of the Bookstore page.

If you bought a used textbook, or if your new textbook did not come with a book key, you may purchase your book online, from the Bookstore. Just find the appropriate book, click Buy, and enter your credit card information.

What is a book key?

A book key is a code that grants you access to an online book. The book key may come prepackaged with a new textbook, or may be purchased separately, from the Bookstore. Once you have a book key, you may enter it in the upper-right corner of the Bookstore page in order to begin using your book.

Do I need a course code?

Unless you are using your book on your own, outside of a school setting, you will need a course code. A course code allows an instructor to track your progress through the book and to assign grades. Your instructor will provide you with a course code.

How do I register for a different instructor's course?

If you are currently registered in an instructor's course and want to register for a different instructor's course, follow these steps:

  1. Go to http://hlc.quia.com.
  2. Log into your account.
  3. Locate the book and current course in the student workstation and click Options.
  4. Click Change course/instructor.
  5. Enter the new course code in the Course Code box and click Submit.

If your course has ended and you want to register for another course, follow these steps:

  1. Go to http://hlc.quia.com.
  2. Log in to your account.
  3. Locate the book in the student workstation and click Enroll.
  4. Enter the new course code and click Submit.

What do I do when my book expires?

Book keys generally provide access to a book for 18 months. When your book expires, you can extend the book for an additional 18 months by following these steps:

  1. Go to http://hlc.quia.com.
  2. Log in to your account.
  3. Locate the book in the Student Workstation and click Extend.
  4. Enter the required credit card information and submit the form.

Access to your book will be extended.


How do I create an instructor account?

Creating an account is easy. An account gives you access to the instructor and student workstations on HLC. If you do not have an account and would like to create one now, click here. You will need a valid e-mail address.

How do I obtain an instructor trial?

As an instructor, you may request a trial book key, which will give you access to a book for 30 days. To request a trial key, go to the Bookstore and click the Adoptions and trials link next to the book you would like to try. Select the option to request a 30-day trial and submit the form with your contact information and press Submit. A representative will contact you to give you a trial book key. Once you receive the book key, you may enter it in the upper-right corner of the Bookstore. Then, you may begin using the book.

How do I adopt a book?

Go to the Bookstore, find the book you are interested in, and click Adoptions and trials. Select I am ready to adopt this book. Complete the rest of the form with your contact information and click Submit. A representative will contact you and give you an adoption book key. Once you receive the book key, you may enter it in the upper-right corner of the Bookstore. The book will be added to your instructor workstation. You may use it as is, or, if you wish, you may begin customizing it to fit your needs. When you are ready, you can grant access to your students by giving them the appropriate course codes.

How do I create a new course for a new term?

Now that you have successfully completed a course, you can set up a brand new course with new classes each semester. In most cases, as long as you are using the same book as last semester, you do not need a new book key. In cases where a book key is required, you will be prompted to enter the key before completing the Create a new course form.

To start a new term with new students, follow these steps:

  1. Go to http://hlc.quia.com
    2. Log into your account.
  2. Click the course title.
  3. Click the Options tab.
  4. Click Create new course and fill out the form.
  5. Click Submit when you are finished.

Once you have created your new course, you can create new classes by selecting the course and filling out the form in the Classes tab.


I forgot my password. What can I do?

Don't worry. Go to the Password Request Form. A new password will be sent to the e-mail address specified in your profile.

I forgot my username. What can I do?

Don't worry. Go to the Username Request Form. Your username will be automatically sent to the e-mail address specified in your profile.

I want to change my password. What can I do?

Go to the Change Password Form and change your password. You will be prompted to log in if you have not already done so.

How do I change my e-mail address?

Go to the Profile Form. Enter your new e-mail address and click Save changes.

How do I change my name?

You must submit a request to Technical Support. Please note that you cannot change the name on your account to that of another student.
